Tyre stockpile burns in Melbourne’s north

More than 100 firefighters were called to a large fire at a tyre recycling yard in Melbourne’s northern suburbs on Monday (11 January).

The fire was reported just before 9.00am on Monday morning. On arrival at Tyre Crumb’s yard in an industrial area of Broadmeadows, the fire brigade found a large fire in a pile of tyres measuring 100 by 30 metres.

By Monday evening, the fire had burned through around 70 per cent of the pile, destroying an estimated 150,000 tyres. At its height, firefighters were putting 10,000 litres of water on the blaze every minute and the large smoke plume from the blaze could be seen from as far a distance as Dromana, 100 kilometres away.

The air quality in the area is being monitored by EPA Victoria.

“It’s proving to be quite a challenging fire and crews are doing their best to get it under control but it will take some time,” said Melbourne Fire Brigade Incident Controller David Youssef.

At this stage, the cause of the fire remains unknown.
