The nation’s largest community-based environmental event, Clean Up Australia Day will be celebrating its 35th annual year on Sunday 2 March.
Clean up Australia Day occurs once a year when communities from around the country unite to pick up litter in their local area.
In its 35 years, over 22 million Australians have participated in the event, including community members, schools, businesses and councils.
Around the country, local councils and governments are encouraging their residents to register and get involved in the milestone Clean Up day and the School Clean Up day on Friday 28 February.
This year, the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) Government will participate in and host two events to celebrate the anniversary.
On Sunday 2 March locals can gather at either Harrison District Playing Fields or Gordon Oval number two.
Tara Cheyne, Minister for City and Government Services, said Canberrans are encouraged to get involved and help make this the biggest event yet.
“Every year after the event our city services crews pick up 500-600 bags of rubbish collected during the registered activities across the ACT, and arrange for their disposal,” said Cheyne.
“Crews will again be out in action on the day. I encourage interested Canberrans to join us at these sites, get to know some of the city services crew members and learn more about what they do to support our beautiful environment.”
For two weeks after the event, the ACT Government will undertake a range of additional efforts to reduce litter including issuing infringements for unsecure loads, removing abandoned shopping trolleys and additional clearing of local lakes and ponds to remove litter and debris.
Councils across Australia are hosting their own Clean Up Australia Day events including:
- Greater Dandenong Council: Sunday 2 March, Ross Reserve, Greaves Reserve, WJ Turner Reserve, Booth Reserve
- Glen Eira City Council:Sunday 2 March, Station St, Caulfield East
- Manningham Council: Sunday 2 March, Boronia Reserve Doncaster
