Coles and Woolworths have been congratulated by the Australian Retailers Association for stepping up to take on REDcycle soft plastics.
The supermarkets announced today they have offered to take over the REDcycle soft plastic stockpile and save thousands of tonnes of recyclable material from landfill.
ARA CEO Paul Zahra commended the move. “Coles and Woolworths have gone above and beyond, taking steps to intervene in providing a solution,” he said.
REDcycle suspended its soft plastics collection program in November 2022. Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) has since uncovered 14 warehouses across Victoria with stockpiles of soft plastics from the REDcycle program.
Single plastics make up a third of environmental waste and are a leading cause of ocean ecosystem decline across the world.
The ARA has also encouraged government to support the development and implementation of collection processes.
