Ballarat City Council is launching an ambitious plan to become a 100 per cent circular economy by 2050.

The council aims to capitalise on emerging opportunities to be a leader in renewable energy systems. Its Circular Ballarat Framework maps out ways to manage waste and protect natural assets.

Circular Ballarat, an initiative to help local businesses understand circular economy and develop their own business models, will launch 9 September.

It will look at how other businesses have successfully applied circular economy frameworks and outline Ballarat City’s priorities.

Council initiatives, ASPIRE and Ready Set Grow Circular will also be launched to help local businesses decide if they want to be involved.

Key speakers will include Councillor Daniel Maloney, Mayor of Ballarat; Sean Trewick, Chief Executive of Circular Economy Victoria; and Alicia Darvall, Director Regionals and Partnerships, Sustainability Victoria.

Up to 190 kilograms of general household waste is generated per person each year, and about 30,000 tonnes of waste is sent to landfill at a cost of more than $18 million per year, according to council’s Circular Ballarat Framework document.

Ballarat City Council hopes by 2050 the city will be operating on a closed loop system for all material, water and energy resources.

Circular Ballarat will be launched online from 4pm, 9 September.
