Phase one of a carbon-cutting partnership between LGI Limited (LGI) and Bathurst Regional Council is complete.
LGI recovers biogas from landfill which reduces methane emissions and helps councils such as Bathurst Regional Council to achieve their emissions reduction targets.
The landfill gas management system designed, installed and commissioned at Bathurst Waste Management Centre on Mount Panorama, New South Wales in early 2024, has shown promising results in the first year.
It has captured 2.47 million cubic metres of biogas and reduced carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) emissions by 23,000 tonnes –the equivalent of planting 390,000 seedlings for the next decade or taking 5065 cars off the road for one year.
In phase one of the project, LGI worked with the council to install a new flaring unit, drill 38 gas wells and connect a network of pipes to the flare at the waste management centre.
Jarryd Doran, LGI Chief Executive Officer, said the partnership with Bathurst Regional Council will deliver long-term, meaningful environmental outcomes.
In addition to the 38 gas wells, phase one of the project saw the council’s original gas extraction system upgraded to increase gas extraction and carbon abatement.
LGI will operate, maintain and expand the system for the council.
Robert Taylor, Bathurst Mayor, said the council will receive the Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) generated by the project which can be used to create revenue or offset harder to abate emissions.
“The new biogas system will allow better collection of the biogas and is an important step towards meeting the council’s adopted emissions reduction targets of 25 per cent by 2025 and 60 per cent by 2035,” Taylor said.
