Victoria’s transition to a circular economy will be boosted by training from the United Nations System Staff College.
Metropolitan Waste and Resource Recovery Group (MWRRG) will host a six-week course for up to 300 participants, set to benefit from experts, international best practice and case studies to give them the skills to champion sustainable practices in their workplaces and local communities.
The course, from 21 February 2022, examines topics such as turning waste into new products, embedding circular economy criteria in procurements and offering lifetime repairs on products.
The United Nations System Staff College is a centre of excellence for training and knowledge within the UN. It offers programs in leadership and management to address the challenges posed by the adoption of Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development.
The Recycling Victoria policy will create a statewide recycling system including supporting the state’s councils as they transition to a four-bin household recycling system and delivering the new Container Deposit Scheme, which is expected to half Victoria’s litter.
The Andrews Government is investing $515 million towards transformation of the waste and recycling sector, which will create about 3900 jobs.
Lily D’Ambrosio, Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change said the course will help councils and the waste sector to deliver ambitious targets set out in Recycling Victoria: a new economy plan to reduce waste, boost jobs and tackle climate change.
“We’re excited to partner – in a global first – with the United Nations System Staff College to deliver this course to build our skills and capacity to transition to a circular economy.”
Jill Riseley, Metropolitan Waste and Resource Recovery Group Chief Executive Officer said the course will bring international knowledge and expertise in how to build a circular economy to Victoria.
“Councils are at the forefront of this transition which is why we’re prioritising their participation.”
