The City of Charles Sturt, South Australia, is starting a weekly Food Organics Garden Organics (FOGO) collection trial on 2 May 2023.
For the next 12 months, about 1000 households will have weekly FOGO (green lid) bin collections, with the general waste bin changing to a fortnightly collection.
According to council, about 45-54 per cent of material in the landfill bin (blue lid) could be going into the FOGO bin. With the move to weekly FOGO collections, council expects to see an increase of food waste recycling rates, reduced associated landfill greenhouse gas emissions and the support of the local circular economy through the processing and return of compost back to South Australian soils.
The trial is set to provide data on waste diverted from landfill and rates of contamination as well as provide insights into how a FOGO collection service could be implemented across the City of Charles Sturt in the future.
The trial was funded by Green Industries South Australia.
