Cleanaway Waste Management has opened a new Western Sydney Material Recovery Facility (MRF) in Rooty Hill, capable of processing 120,000 tonnes of commercial and residential recyclables per year.
The MRF will house optical sorting technology, having the capability for up to 99.5 per cent purity across recovered recycled material.
Using advanced technologies such as ballistic separators, optical sorting based on colour and shape, eddy currents, magnets, and wind sifting, the facility will improve the quality and increase the volume of resources recovered from New South Wales commingled recycling.
Together with Cleanaway’s collection and post-collection assets, the MRF will enable Cleanaway to offer a fully integrated solution to its customers in New South Wales. Blacktown City Council will be a foundational partner in the facility.
Mark Schubert, Chief Executive Officer said the MRF is a game- changer for Sydney.
“The MRF is a best-in-class Cleanaway asset that will set a new standard for fire safety, environmental control and resource recovery.
“This new facility directly supports the recycling needs of our growing population while advancing circularity in New South Wales.
“Cleanaway has invested in the most advanced equipment and infrastructure enabling the company to achieve some of Australia’s highest material recovery and purity rates.”
Located at Rooty Hill, the MRF will play a crucial role in strengthening the wider industry’s capacity to recover recyclables.
Plastics from the MRF will be pelletised, to create high-quality food-grade resin for reuse in plastic containers and packaging, such as soft drink bottles and yogurt containers, through Cleanaway’s partnership with Circular Plastics Australia in Altona and Laverton in Victoria.
The Western Sydney MRF aligns with Cleanaway’s Blueprint 2030 strategy, which focuses on integrating and expanding a leading network of infrastructure assets to deliver seamless service, and value for customers.
