Cockburn changes to on-demand verge collections

The City of Cockburn’s bulk waste and garden organics verge collection service will be converted to a pre-booked system from July 2024.

The current system schedules two bulk waste and bulk garden organics collections on set dates throughout the year. Under the new model, approved by the council earlier this month, residents will be able to book their collections when it is convenient for them.

It will take the city two years to transition to the new system, with an implementation date of July 2024. Until then, collections will continue to occur on their normal dates.

Anton Lees, Chief of Operations, said that Cockburn’s verge waste collections were a critical service, but improvements were necessary.

“We know that the verge collection service is highly valued by our community. It is important we continue to offer this service to our residents, while adapting it to be more environmentally sustainable and convenient,” Lees said.

“Other local governments which have implemented pre-booked collections have seen their waste recovery rate rise. This means more waste is reused or recycled, instead of going to landfill.

“As our population has increased, the current scheduled system has been stretched to its limit – resulting in increased wait times and delays to pick-ups. The bookable system will reduce the amount of time that waste is out on the verge in our neighbourhoods.

“It will also provide much greater flexibility for residents. Allowing them to book a collection when they need it, rather than being tied to the city’s pick-up schedule.”

The pre-booked model was designed following community consultation in June-July 2021 in which more than 1000 residents participated in an online survey, community workshops, Facebook Live pop-up sessions and face-to-face discussions.

The new system will provide two collections – one green waste and one bulk waste – for households to book per year. Ratepayers will retain their six trailer passes.
