Compostable bags at Woolworths, SA

compostable bags

Woolworths has launched new locally made compostable fruit and vegetable bags in South Australian stores.

The switch has the potential to divert up to 70 tonnes of plastic waste from landfill each year, with customers now able to compost the bags through their council-provided green bins for organic composting collection, or in their own household DIY compost.

The compostable bags have been made in South Australia by local manufacturer Biobag, and are certified as both home and industrial compostable (Standards AS5810 and AS4736). They are also able to be used as liners in food scrap ‘kitchen caddies’, helping customers both reduce plastic waste and divert household food waste from landfill.

Signage on the bag dispensers and on the bags themselves encourage customers to use the bags to capture food scraps, and to check with their local council to find out whether their kerbside collection service accepts compostable materials.

These bags cannot be disposed of in REDcycle soft plastic collection units.

Woolworths recently trialled the compostable produce bags in a small number of South Australian stores, receiving positive feedback from customers.

More than 75 per cent of those surveyed during the trial said it was important that Woolworths provide compostable bags to customers.
