EPA Victoria to target waste transporters at upcoming expo

National Heavy Vehicle law passes
EPA Victoria (EPA VIC) has confirmed that it will be exhibiting at Waste Management In Action in May to raise awareness about the legal requirements for managing and transporting waste in the state.

As Victoria’s environmental regulator, and to further the environmental objectives of the Environment Protection Act 1970, EPA VIC is working to ensure that waste is safely transported and taken to an appropriate facility through its Illegal Dumping Strikeforce Program. This program has three areas of focus: transport of  prescribed industrial waste (PIW), illegal dumping of construction and demolition waste, and tyre stockpiling, including the management of waste tyre storage in Victoria.

Speaking for EPA VIC, Senior Communications Adviser Emma Forehan said that the Waste Management In Action expo presents the organisation with an “excellent opportunity” to meet with waste producers and transporters to increase their awareness of the legal requirements for managing and transporting waste.

“This is important as EPA inspections of PIW producers and transporters are continuing throughout Victoria, and failure to comply with waste management and transport laws can lead to significant fines and/or loss of transport permits,” she said.

When it comes to what industry visitors can expect to see from EPA VIC at the expo, the organisation will be promoting two videos it launched recently to engage with companies to that manage, treat and transport waste products.

“Industry stakeholders have highlighted the need for education tools which communicate EPA’s technical requirements for waste producers and transporters,” adds Emma. “EPA VIC has taken this feedback on board and produced an animation, Super PIW Bros, to more effectively reach Victoria’s PIW producers and transporters.”

The authority has also produced a second video, Know where your construction and demolition waste goes, targeting mid-tier construction and demolition contractors.

It is keen to promote these new videos, as well existing guidelines and online tools, to help companies in the waste industry comply with their legal requirements in readiness for any EPA VIC  inspection of their site or vehicle.
