The City of Fremantle’s Recycling Centre has been crowned waste champions in the Metro Local Government category of the 2023 WasteSorted Awards.
The Fremantle Recycling Centre won the award for the continuous improvement made towards resource recovery.
The award was presented at Waste Authority WA’s annual event held at Crown Perth last week.
Other finalists in the Metro Local Government category were Eastern Metropolitan Regional Council, Town of Cambridge – Empowering Community Waste Solutions and Western Metropolitan Regional Council – Verge Valet and Recycling Hotline.
This year there were 37 finalists across 10 categories from more than 100 nominations received.
Fremantle Recycling Centre is free for all City of Fremantle and Town of East Fremantle residents. It’s located next to Containers for Change, with both facilities complementing each other’s recycling efforts.
In the 2021-22 financial year, the Fremantle Recycling Centre received 750 tonnes of waste. Of that waste, 575 tonnes were recovered, achieving an overall recovery rate of 77 per cent.
The centre is open three days a week and collects 36 recycling streams, including electrical goods, mobile phones, clothing, whitegoods, garden items and scrap metal. On average, there are 1515 visitors per month, with 18,175 people using the facility in the 2021-22 financial year.
Fremantle Mayor Hannah Fitzhardinge said the win was a testament to the commitment of the passionate team at the City.
“To be the best in the state is a great honour. The award is well-earned recognition for the City staff who are the driving force behind the Fremantle Recycling Centre. It is also recognition for our community who use this fantastic facility, with great enthusiasm, to avoid landfill.”
