Georges River Council has introduced new, upgraded bins with built-in features designed to improve waste collection and reduce the council’s environmental impact.
Elise Borg, Mayor of Georges River Council said the introduction of smart bin technology marks a major step forward in how the council manages waste services across the community.
“These upgrades allow us to deliver a more accurate, efficient, and sustainable system for all residents,” said Borg.
“Residents can feel confident knowing that our upgraded bins and new collection systems are designed to reduce waste, prevent service issues, and ensure every bin is in the right place at the right time.”
The rollout forms part of the New South Wales council’s ongoing bin replacement program for red-lidded general waste, yellow-lidded recycling and green-lidded garden organics bins.
Each new bin has a unique serial number linked to the property address, which the council said helps ensure bins are collected correctly and returned to the right home.
Waste trucks are equipped to read these serial numbers during collection, confirming the bin’s location before it is emptied.
These serial numbers also help the council and its waste contractor identify missed services, track the number of bins collected, and detect unauthorised or unpaid bins.
If a bin goes missing, the serial number can help it be returned to the correct address or removed if stolen or misused.
The bins do not have GPS or tracking devices and cannot monitor locations, or the contents of the bins as they do not have a power source. Only the council and its waste contractor, Veolia, have access to the bin data, in line with strict privacy policies.
As the current bins reach the end of their life cycle, they will be recycled and used to help create the new bins, which will be made from up to 80 per cent recycled material.
Each bin is clearly marked with the Georges River Council logo and features waste disposal tips stamped on the lid. Bin sizes are also printed under the lid, making it easier for residents to check their capacity.
New collection trucks are also being used to support the rollout, fitted with real-time tracking to improve service efficiency and make sure contract standards are met.
