Grants open for organics recycling infrastructure

Organics recycling and processing operators in Western Australia can apply for funding to support the state’s uptake of Food Organics, Garden Organics (FOGO) recycling.

The state has allocated $1.25 million in the latest round of WasteSorted grants, with the possibility of more funding, to support the construction or purchase of a broad range of infrastructure and equipment that can recycle separated FOGO materials, diverting them from landfill.

Administered by the Waste Authority, these grants are aligned with the objectives of the Waste Avoidance and Resource Recovery Strategy 2030, including recovering more value and resources from solid waste.

Eligible organisations include businesses (normally with at least one year of continuous operation), incorporated community groups, local governments, not-for-profit organisations and regional councils.

Applications close on 7 October 7.

Environment Minister Reece Whitby said the state is committed to making landfill the last resort and is continuing to invest in Western Australia’s organic collection capacity and its associated processing infrastructure.

He said the grants program is another step towards creating a low-waste, sustainable state.
