Australia’s first ever phytocap survey will be conducted by Queensland’s Griffith University.
The survey, supported by Waste Management and Resource Recovery Association of Australia (WMRR), will be conducted by Green Infrastructure Research Labs (GIRLS) and aims to explore the state of landfill phytocapping in Australia.
Phytocapping is a sustainable alternative method for closing landfills that uses plants and soil to reduce water and gas entering the landfill.
The survey will look at the challenges and barriers faced by waste management experts, regulators, and landfill stakeholders in implementing phytocapping and making landfill after-use decisions. It is open to participants from both the private and public sectors.
The aim is to identify the factors limiting the adoption and optimisation of phytocapping technology and generate insights that will inform updated guidelines and potential training programs for industry stakeholders.
It is expected the survey will create a baseline for industry practices and experience with phytocapping technology nationally and will inform an update to the phytocap guidelines.
The survey will include questions about landfill rehabilitation practices, decision-making processes for landfill capping, and the design, construction, and maintenance of phytocaps.
Additionally, participants are invited to share any insights or remarks regarding landfill rehabilitation, governance, and policy that they believe would add value to this research.
The survey will take 15-20 minutes to complete and is anonymous and confidential.
