International Compost Awareness Week

Sustainability Victoria strategy

International Compost Awareness Week Australia (ICAW) runs from 1-7 May.

ICAW is a week of activities, events and publicity to improve awareness of the importance of  compost, a valuable organic resource and to promote compost use, knowledge and products.

ICAW Australia is an initiative of the Centre for Organic Research & Education (CORE), a not-for-profit organisation conducting year round organic research, education and awareness activities.

CORE also organises National Organic Week Australia (NOW).

Within these two programs CORE promotes and manages the key aspects that lead to community change towards organic products and practices.

Food waste makes up about 40 per cent of the contents of the household rubbish bins.

To prevent this waste going direct to landfill which adds to carbon pollution, composting at home is a viable and sustainable option to create valuable soil additives that can be used in vegetable and ornamental gardens.

At an individual level, composting can save money, improve garden and reduce environmental impacts.

In support of reducing food waste and increasing the use of compost, Yarra Ranges Council offers rebates of up to $40 to residents who have recently purchased equipment for composting at home. Equipment eligible for the rebate includes a compost bin, ‘Compost mate’ turning tool, compost/worm farm blanket, worm farm, composting worms and Bokashi bin.
