Kiama Council in New South Wales has developed a waste and sustainable materials strategy to reduce waste, improve resource recovery, and create a sustainable future for the community.
The draft strategy has four priorities, improve infrastructure planning and environmental management, optimise waste management costs and foster adaptive waste management contracts, support and implement innovative internal waste management initiatives and reduce emissions from all waste management operations.
To develop the strategy, the council considered population growth forecasts, looked at current services, including the number and types of services, tonnages of waste and content such as Food Organics Garden Organics (FOGO), recycling, residual waste.
The draft reflects community feedback about waste management following consultations on the Community Strategic Plan in 2022. It also aligns with waste strategies at other councils as well as the New South Wales and Federal governments.
The draft strategy is available for community feedback until Friday 1 November 2024.
The feedback will be collated, reviewed and considered in completing the strategy to be provided to councillors for endorsement.
