The Victorian Government will repurpose decommissioned bus shelters which would otherwise be unused, as part of works on the Level Crossing Removal Project (LXRP).
The LXRP is removing 110 dangerous and congested level crossings across Melbourne by 2030. With a new Pakenham Station open and bus shelters no longer needed at the eastern station, the LXRP has commenced work on the new Melton Station in the west.
The decommissioned bus shelters from Pakenham Station will be used as temporary bus stops in Melton while the new elevated station is built, giving passengers seating and shelter from the weather.
Victoria’s Big Build aims to deliver its major transport projects sustainably. Wherever possible, the government will use recycled materials and construction practices that reduce carbon emissions.
In 2024 two sustainability initiatives were used on the Pakenham Level Crossing Removal project.
Coffee concrete developed at RMIT University was laid into a footpath in Pakenham, while recycled kerbs were also trialled on a section of the East Pakenham Station car park.
