A grant from the New South Wales Government will allow Lismore City Council to invest $5 million in nine new state-of-the-art waste collection vehicles to increase the effectiveness of its waste management operations.
This one-off grant will be used to purchase the new garbage trucks equipped with modern technology, helping the council to provide more efficient waste collection for the community.
The technology will assess what is coming into the truck and ensure the most optimal routes are selected for pickups.
The council experienced significant and ongoing impacts to its waste service following the 2022 floods.
In a statement, the council said its ageing fleet of trucks spent more time in the repair shop than they did on the road, leading to complaints from residents that their garbage had not been collected.
The grant means the waste collection service can be delivered inhouse with council workers rather than contractors.
Steve Krieg, Mayor, Lismore City Council said the funding is welcomed by the council. He thanked the State Government, through the support of the Premier, Minister for Local Government, Janelle Saffin and the United Services Union, for continued support to Lismore during the long road to recovery.
