Planet Ark, along with the Australian Circular Economy Hub (ACE Hub) announced a new circular economy research report on day one of the inaugural Circularity conference in Sydney.
Planet Ark Head of Circular Economy Development Nicole Garofano revealed State of Circularity in Australia: Perspectives from the field yesterday at a session, alongside representatives from the report’s research and authorship partners.
A collaboration between the ACE Hub, Edge Environment, MRA Consulting Group, Point Advisory, Thinkable Partners, ThinkPlace, and thinkstep-anz; the report aims to highlight examples of the nation’s progress towards a circular economy, while providing practical guidance to inspire further advancement and collaboration.
Each chapter focuses on the experience of these contributors, and their findings from working with clients across a range of industries and sectors in the circular economy.
The report establishes a baseline understanding of the circular economy in Australia by visualising Australia’s circular economy opportunities using ecosystem mapping, maximising opportunities to deliver value within circular systems, understanding how circular thinking catalyses transformative sustainable change, assessing the power of procurement with the Australian retail sector as a case study, and surveying the place for the circular economy in local government.
It identifies several key findings and recommendations, including the importance of collaboration and systemic change across all areas of industry and government; the need for governments to take the lead with strategies, regulation and education; an attitude shift from companies away from sustainability for the sake of compliance; and the need for investment from the public and private sectors to test new technologies.
