Environment Protection Authority (EPA) Victoria has granted a Development Licence (DL) for local scrap metal recycler, Recycal, at its facility in Ringwood.
The licence allows Recycal to expand its existing metal recycling activities under strict conditions, enabling the company to accept new waste types and store up to 3000 tonnes of waste at the site at any one time.
Under the licence, the facility can also recycle more types of waste, including electronic waste, metals, end-of-life vehicles, waste oils and residues from industrial waste treatment.
EPA Victoria has determined the proposal meets the requirements of the General Environmental Duty under the Environment Protection Act and will contribute towards Victoria’s circular economy drive in a safe and responsible manner.
Conditions have been set to ensure the design and operation of Recycal’s Ringwood facility will minimise risks to human health and the environment.
EPA Victoria also considered concerns raised in the 200 community submissions received over the two consultation periods prior to granting Recycal its DL.
Following the completion of the DL activities, including proof of performance and commissioning of the expanded proposal, Recycal will need to apply for and obtain an EPA Operating Licence to continue to operate at the expanded scale.
