RecycleSmart, a startup on a mission to make recycling as easy as ordering a pizza, is expanding its Power Pickup service to cater to businesses.
This on-demand doorstep collection service addresses the challenge of recycling difficult items, such as soft plastics, e-waste, clothes, batteries, polystyrene, and more. With more than 10,000 active users, primarily in Sydney, the Power Pickup service has proven its effectiveness by collecting 470,000 kilograms of valuable resources.
In response to the growing demand from residents and businesses alike, RecycleSmart has recently extended its operations to Melbourne. RecycleSmart is also strategically expanding its services to cater to the specific requirements of businesses.
The latest National Waste report highlights that Commercial and Industrial (C&I) waste accounts for 43 per cent (32.8MT) of Australia’s total waste production, with only 55 per cent of it being recycled. The recovery rate is declining, leading to concerns about the challenges ahead in achieving further progress. “The easiest-to-recycle materials are dealt with and future gains in recovery will be harder to win,” the report states.
Recognising the urgency to address the recycling challenges faced by businesses, Giorgio Baracchi, Co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of RecycleSmart, said: “Recycling for businesses is just as daunting as it is for individuals, if not more so. They are under increasing pressure from their employees and customers to embrace sustainability”.
Buoyed by the success of its recent crowdfunding campaign, which raised more than $137 million with the support of 965 investors, RecycleSmart is now ready to accelerate its business program.
How does the Power Pickup service work for businesses? It’s simple. Any organisation can create an account, collect its difficult-to-recycle items in bags or bins (with the option of receiving personalised advice and bins from RecycleSmart), and book a pickup for the next day.
Baracchi highlighted the strength of the service, stating: “The agility and versatility of our model allows us to offer tailored solutions to specific needs, whether it’s businesses or building managers. These spin-offs of the Power Pickup service are additional tools that can significantly accelerate Australia’s transition towards a more circular economy.”
