More than 70 per cent of respondents to a local government recycling survey believe their recycling doesn’t actually get recycled.
Throughout April and May 2024, Snowy Monaro Regional Council conducted a survey to gain a better understanding of local recycling habits across the Bombala, Delegate, Bibbenluke and Cathcart areas in New South Wales.
The results will help inform the council on what recycling services look like in the future and develop waste and recycling education campaigns.
Key findings found 94 per cent of respondents use their yellow-lidded recycling bin, while 93 per cent feel they understand what can go in the recycling bin.
Other results included 87 per cent of respondents feeling more recycling bins are needed in public spaces. Seventy per cent said they would like to see more recycling education information shared by council as well as the introduction of a green waste collection service.
Mandy Thurling, Snowy Monaro Regional Council Manager of Resource and Waste Services, said the results provide valuable insights.
‘We are pleased to see such high use of recycling bins, but it’s clear we need to build more trust in the recycling process,’ she said.
Council said the survey brought to light issues with the collection service in the area, which it is now addressing.
