Sydney Water will continue to aid the Sydney Zoo in New South Wales to explore opportunities to introduce water recycling initiatives across a range of exhibits.
Since 2022, the zoo’s 1.1 million litre bull shark tank has been using a recycled water system, reducing the volume of water waste by more than 30,000 kilolitres.
Suhanti Thirunavukarasu, Sydney Water Conservation Program Manager, said the bull shark tanks have been operating advanced filtration, similar to how wastewater is processed in treatment plants.
“Technology such as ultraviolet (UV) filtration targets and eliminates particles from wastewater during the cleaning process, creating a water product suitable for the delicate ecosystem home to the sharks at Sydney Zoo,” said Thirunavukarasu.
Sydney Zoo has reduced its overall water consumption over the past four years through several water recycling initiatives with the help of Sydney Water.
Thirunavukarasu said these initiatives are a great conversation starter for the community and a continued partnership will help Sydney Water to engage directly with the community and provide valuable education about the urban water cycle.
New research from Sydney Water has highlighted Sydney residents need to shift water behaviours, particularly saving water in and around the home.
“We are looking forward to engaging with the zoo’s guests and talking about where our water comes from, where it goes once it has been used, and providing information about new and potential water sources like purified recycled water and desalination,” Thirunavukarasu said.
