TAS Waste Treatment Facility A Step Closer

The Tasmania Environment Protection Authority (EPA TAS)  has concluded its assessment of a controlled waste treatment facility in the Glenorchy area.

Under the proposal, the site at 8 Birdwood Avenue in Moonah would receive and remediate up to 2,500 tonnes of potentially contaminated soil and 25,000 litres of potentially contaminated liquids each year. The owners intend to remediate the received product through a variety of chemical and physical methods.

In his determination, EPA TAS Director Wes Ford concluded that the controlled waste treatment facility could be developed and managed in an environmentally sustainable and acceptable manner, with certain conditions.

“The EPA requires these conditions to be included in any permit subsequently granted by the Glenorchy City Council,” Mr Ford said.

In his deliberations, Mr Ford considered various environmental issues that could arise from the facility, specifically the potential for impacts on commercial neighbours due to odour, dust and noise.

“A number of conditions have been included to ensure close management of odour, dust and noise emissions from the treatment facility,” he said.

“One requirement is for the remediation activities to be conducted only with the treatment building’s doors closed, and another condition requires the operator to prepare and implement an air quality management plan,” added Mr Ford.

The EPA TAS environmental assessment, including the conditions that must be included in any permit, have been forwarded to Glenorchy City Council, for review of planning issues prior to making a decision as to whether a permit is to be granted.
