TOMRA Cleanaway, West Zone Network Operator for Victoria’s Container Deposit Scheme (CDS Vic), has hit a recycling milestone: collecting more than one billion eligible drink containers since the scheme’s launch in November 2023.
TOMRA Cleanaway’s network spans 28 local government areas, with 196 refund points, including high-volume automated depots, reverse vending machine (RVM) sites and over-the-counter partners.
James Dorney, Chief Executive Officer of TOMRA Cleanaway, said reaching more than one billion containers is more than a numerical milestone – it’s a powerful demonstration of what’s possible when communities, industry, and government work together.
“Every container returned contributes to cleaner environments, reduced landfill, and stronger support for local charities and community groups,” Dorney said. “It also demonstrates that a well-designed container deposit scheme can underpin the state’s broader circular economy and emissions reduction targets.”
Under CDS Vic, Victorians receive a 10-cent refund for every eligible drink container returned, incentivising participation while delivering measurable environmental and social benefits. By recycling one billion containers, the West Zone community has helped save thousands of tonnes of material from landfill and significantly reduced greenhouse gas emissions.
TOMRA Cleanaway delivers its network of accessible, technology-enabled refund points across the West Zone, working in partnership with councils, social enterprises, community organisations and local businesses.
