Victoria’s City of Yarra is changing the collection schedule of its glass bins from fortnightly to every four weeks.
The change follows a community consultation session, in which 67 per cent of residents said their glass bin was collected too often or was not full on collection day. Waste audits also found glass bins were, on average, only about one-third full when collected.
The council said moving to a four-weekly collection schedule will reduce collection vehicle trips and allow it to direct resources elsewhere.
Residents can also use Yarra’s online bin lookup tool to check upcoming collection dates.
Purple-lidded glass-only bins are being rolled out in councils and shires across Victoria as part of the state government’s effort to reduce contamination among recycled materials.
While some councils have adopted the new bin, others have resisted, citing community costs as one key factor. Councils opposing the bins have formed the ‘Let’s Be Clear on Glass’ campaign and are challenging the mandated rollout.
According to the Victorian Government, the rollout is expected to be complete in July 2027.
