Packaging, paper, and recycling company Visy is launching an Australian-made paper bubble wrap that provides shockproof cushioning for storing, moving, or shipping items.
An independent third-party analysis found that when recycled through Australian kerbside recycle bins, the locally made alternative generates 34 per cent lower carbon emissions, uses 73 per cent less energy over its lifetime and consumes 39 per cent less water when compared to plastic bubble wrap.
Christian Elbert, Visy Retail Services – Head of Innovation, said the new Paper Bubble is a win for the environment and Australian manufacturing.
“Aussies want to do the right thing by the environment, and they want products to work – Paper Bubble does both,” Elbert said.
“By using Australian paper and manufacturing the Paper Bubble locally, we’re supporting local jobs in Australia and reducing our reliance on single-use plastic.
“Once you’re done with it, just pop it in the recycling bin at home, and we’ll turn it into new products.”
The Paper Bubble is being made at Visy’s manufacturing plant in Reservoir in Melbourne’s north with paper from Visy’s paper mill in Tumut, New South Wales.
Visy engaged an independent certified practitioner to conduct a life cycle analysis (LCA) to assess the difference in environmental impact of Paper Bubble compared to low-density polyethylene (LDPE) plastic bubble wrap.
They measured the exact same amount of each material (one square metre) and tracked the environmental footprint from the moment the raw materials were sourced all the way through to how the product is disposed of by the customer.
The study was double-checked by a separate panel of specialists to guarantee the results.
