The Victorian Waste Management Association (VWMA) will host an ‘Applications Masterclass’ to equip businesses with the knowledge and tools to submit quality applications to the Environment Protection Authority (EPA).
The aim is to help improve approval outcomes and reduce processing times.
The class, held on February 20, 2025, will guide attendees through recent regulatory changes, key EPA assessment criteria, and strategies to navigate common challenges such as rejections, conditions, or extended determination periods.
An expert panel and interactive workshops will give participants practical insights to enhance their applications.
Mark Smith, Executive Officer for VWMA, highlighted the importance of industry-driven solutions. He said businesses are frustrated by lengthy approval processes.
“The solution isn’t just waiting, it’s about improving application quality and understanding the process,” he said.
“Our masterclass provides clear guidance and expert advice to help businesses submit stronger applications that align with the EPA’s expectations.
“We are working with experts including SPM (environmental consultants) and Russell Kennedy (law firm) to deliver this program and I’m sure attendees will find all of it useful, informative and practical.”
VWMA has also partnered with the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) and industry leaders to deliver a Social Licence & Community Engagement Masterclass on March 18, 2025.
This training will focus on best-practice community engagement, social licence principles, and the tools required to support planning and EPA applications.
The program will provide attendees with practical templates and strategies to strengthen public and regulatory trust in waste and recycling projects.
Adrien Scott, VWMA President, said strong community engagement is essential for building trust and long-term success in the waste and recycling industry.
“This program will give businesses the frameworks and skills they need to engage effectively and responsibly,” said Scott.
Both events are open to VWMA members and non-members, with registrations now available.
