Fifteen community organisations will share in more than $54,000 in funding for projects that help tackle litter in Western Australia.
The announcement of the Community Litter Grants is a key feature of Keep Australia Beautiful Week, which kicked off on Monday.
Since its inception almost a decade ago, the grant program has supported community projects targeting litter reduction and behaviour in Western Australia. In that time, it has provided a total of $540,644 in funding to community and other organisations.
In the latest round, the City of Bunbury received $7370 towards a community engagement program targeting behaviour change among youth, while the York Community Resource Centre received $5000 for a similar project involving a collaboration of local community groups.
Eco Surf Australia received $5000 in funding to design and manufacture a dinghy for river and beach cleaning, and OzFish Unlimited will receive $4086 towards its Kayaks for Clean Rivers project.
The Shire of Pingelly is targeting cigarette waste, with $4920 to help install cigarette butt disposal poles, which will be decorated by local artists.
Other successful applicants include Duncraig Primary School, Earth Solutions Avon Valley Inc., Hopetoun Community Resource Centre, Our Lady of Lourdes School, Pilbara Dive and Tours, Share Shed Bassendean, Shire of Carnamah, Shire of Exmouth, The Shire of Three Springs, and Walpole Community Resource Centre.
Reece Whitby, Environment Minister, congratulated the grant recipients on their dedication to tackling litter.
“Western Australians continue to show their commitment to the environment through innovative litter prevention projects,” he said.
“Keep Australia Beautiful Week highlights the important work being done by both the Keep Australia Beautiful Council and the wider community in keeping our unique state litter free.”
Keep Australia Beautiful Week aims to build awareness about how individuals can reduce their impact on the environment and encourage action.
Everybody can get involved in preventing and cleaning up litter through Keep Australia Beautiful Council programs, including Adopt-a-Spot, Tidy Towns, Clean Schools, Community Clean-ups and by becoming a litter reporter.
