Western Australian organisations who have driven the state’s recycling and waste reduction efforts, have been recognised and celebrated at the annual 2024 WasteSorted Awards.
This year, the awards celebrated 40 finalists across 10 categories I think there’s a word or two missing here those who make landfill the last resort by avoiding, reusing, repairing and recycling waste, while inspiring others to follow in their footsteps.
The Eastern Metropolitan Regional Council (EMRC) was awarded the 2024 Local Government / Regional Council award for its waste management initiatives.
Councillor Aaron Bowman expressed his pride in the team’s achievement, stating it was testament to its dedication to creating a sustainable future for the community through innovative waste management practices.
The EMRC Chief Executive Officer Marcus Geisler added, ‘The EMRC’s sustainability strategy is not just a plan but a reflection of the organisation’s culture and values. The surpluses of our activities are reinvested into community-owned circularity infrastructure as well as education and engagement programs.
“This accolade is a fantastic recognition of the hard work and dedication of the entire EMRC team, and we are proud to be acknowledged by the Waste Authority.”
Select winners include:
- City of Kwinana, which won the Community Engagement Award for its efforts to collect community data on recycling perceptions while educating residents at their bins.
- Green Skills Inc. – Denmark Tip Shop, which won the Waste Champion Team Award for providing residents of, and visitors to, the Great Southern region the opportunity to reuse and upcycle.
- Perth Chemical Specialists, which won the Small Business Award for creating a groundbreaking chemical innovation designed specifically for the treatment of ammonium nitrate emulsion waste; and
- Uluu, which won the Innovation Award for its product that turns fermented seaweed into a plastic alternative to reduce plastic waste.
Reece Whitby, Environment Minister, said each winner serves as an example of the achievements that can be made.
“A circular economy provides social and economic benefits by increasing employment opportunities and encouraging community action,” he said.
“These awards are a positive way to recognise and celebrate the great work being done by those who have committed to waste generation, increasing recovery of valuable materials from there appears to be something missing here.”
Winners were announced at a gala dinner award ceremony as part of the state’s annual Waste and Resource Recovery Conference.
