Western Australian councils join FOGO

Councils

Three more councils in Western Australia have joined the three bin Food Organic, Garden Organic (FOGO) system.

Town of Cambridge, City of Swan and Shire of Mundaring will roll out the bins to more than 250,000 households across metropolitan Perth.

The system is part of Western Australia’s Waste Avoidance and Resource Recovery Strategy 2030, supported by the State Government’s $20 million Better Bins Plus: Go FOGO program.

Reece Whitby, Environment Minister, said households throughout Western Australia are responding well to the FOGO bin system.

“They’re doing their bit to avoid waste, improving recycling rates, and ultimately doing what’s right for Western Australia’s environment,” he said.

“While this is an important milestone, I want to see even more local governments listen to Western Australia’s households and get on board with this system.”

The system is aimed at improving recycling and reducing waste throughout Western Australia. Participating local governments are achieving a recovery rate of 56 per cent compared to 14 per cent for those with the two-bin system.

FOGO is currently available to 22 local governments in the Perth, Peel and south west regions. It is expected nine more local governments in Perth will introduce FOGO by June 2026.
