EPA Victoria has approved a development licence for Yarra Valley Water to build a waste-to-energy (WtE) facility at Nelson Road, Lillydale
The approval was granted after consultation with the community and extensive consideration of all the evidence, both from the applicant and through EPA’s independent research.
The proposed facility will process waste through anaerobic digestion to produce biogas which will be combusted onsite in two 1.2 MW combined heat and power units, providing over 13,000 MWh of electrical energy per year.
EPA has taken into consideration concerns around air, odour and noise emissions and assessed that these can be acceptably managed with the strict conditions put in place.
Yarra Valley Water will still need to gain other approvals before the project can proceed.
